Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Guitar Maestro (“we”, “us” or “our”) handles personal information when you use Guitar Maestro on iOS, iPadOS or Android, together with its related account and support services.
We designed Guitar Maestro to collect only the information needed to provide accounts, learning progress, app features, subscriptions, security and support. We do not sell personal information.
1. Who is responsible for your information
Guitar Maestro is operated by Capsicum, which is the controller of the personal information described in this policy. Contact us using the form on this website.
For privacy questions or requests, use the Guitar Maestro contact form and include “Guitar Maestro Privacy” in your message.
2. Information we collect
Depending on the features you use, we may process:
- Account information: a Firebase account identifier and information supplied by your chosen Apple or Google sign-in provider, such as your email address, display name, profile image and provider identifier.
- Learner profile information: your chosen display name, experience level, years playing, practice focus, learning goals, preferred styles, notation, fretboard system, session length, language, locale and time zone.
- Learning and gamification information: lesson activity, attempts, completion, reviews, stars, practice time, XP, streaks, mastery, achievements, goals and progress summaries.
- Preferences: learning settings, reminder choices, notification schedules and subscription-promotion preferences.
- Purchase and entitlement information: subscription product, store, status, renewal state and expiry information. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card details.
- Technical and security information: IP address, app and device information, operating system, request timestamps, integrity signals and security records that our infrastructure and service providers need to deliver and protect the service.
- Support information: information you provide when contacting us, including your contact details, message, screenshots and troubleshooting details.
3. Microphone access and guitar assessment
Guitar Maestro may request microphone permission when you choose to start calibration or an available listening assessment. Microphone input is analysed on your device to assess notes, chords and playing.
Microphone input used for an assessment is analysed on your device. Optional recording or review features may save a recording on your device. We do not use microphone recordings for advertising or include them in product analytics. If you choose to export or share a recording, the copy you share is handled by the destination you choose.
During an assessment, the app may temporarily calculate signal levels, pitch, timing, confidence and similar musical measurements. Afterward, it may store only local calibration settings and aggregate diagnostic counts such as passes, failures or inconclusive results. These local audio settings can be cleared from the app.
You can deny or later withdraw microphone permission in your device settings. Features that do not require listening assessment remain available, although microphone-based feedback will not work.
4. Information stored on your device
The app stores some information locally so that it can work reliably and support offline use. This may include profile and onboarding state, cached progress, pending practice events, learning preferences, reminder schedules, downloaded or packaged content, and the audio calibration information and any optional local recordings described above.
Clearing the app's data or uninstalling it normally removes locally stored information. Uninstalling the app does not by itself delete information connected to your online account.
5. How we use information
We use information to:
- Create, authenticate and protect your account
- Provide lessons, learning settings and cross-device progress
- Calculate progress, streaks, achievements, mastery and other gamification features
- Provide starter or premium access and maintain subscription entitlements
- Schedule reminders and apply your notification preferences
- Provide data export, account deletion and other account controls
- Respond to support, privacy and copyright enquiries
- Prevent fraud, abuse, duplicate rewards and unauthorised access
- Comply with legal, accounting and regulatory obligations
Automated calculations may determine lesson progress, rewards and access to content. They do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
6. Our legal bases
Where UK or European data-protection law applies, we rely on one or more of these legal bases:
- Contract: to create your account and provide the learning, progress, subscription and account features you request.
- Legitimate interests: to secure the service, prevent abuse, respond to support requests and improve reliability, balanced against your rights.
- Consent: where we ask for an optional device permission or another choice that legally requires consent. You may withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation: where information must be retained or disclosed to meet applicable law.
7. Service providers and sharing
We use service providers only where needed to operate Guitar Maestro. These may include:
- Google Firebase: authentication, cloud database, functions, storage, app integrity and infrastructure.
- Apple and Google: sign-in, app distribution, device services and store billing.
- RevenueCat: subscription and entitlement management using your app account identifier and purchase status.
- YouTube: optional external video content, as described below.
Providers process information under their own terms and privacy notices as well as any agreements they have with us. We may also disclose information to professional advisers, regulators, courts or authorities where reasonably necessary or legally required, or in connection with a business reorganisation.
We do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing.
8. Analytics, crash reporting and advertising
At the date of this policy, product analytics and remote crash reporting are disabled in Guitar Maestro. We do not use account, progress or microphone information for behavioural advertising, and we do not sell personal information.
If we introduce optional remote analytics or crash reporting in the future, we will first review the privacy impact, update this policy and provide any choice or consent required by law.
9. Optional YouTube content
Some lessons may offer optional YouTube content. The YouTube player is not loaded until you choose to open it. When it loads, YouTube may receive connection and device information such as your IP address, WebView details, cookies or similar identifiers, and your interactions with its player. YouTube may display its own controls, branding or advertising.
We do not send your profile, lesson progress, rewards, assessment results or microphone audio to YouTube. Watching optional YouTube content does not complete a lesson or award progress.
10. International processing
We and our service providers may process information in the United Kingdom, European Economic Area and other countries. Where required, we use recognised safeguards for international transfers, such as adequacy regulations or approved contractual protections.
11. Children and younger learners
Guitar Maestro is intended for learners aged 10 and over. It is not intended for children under 10. A parent or legal guardian must review these notices, accept the Terms on behalf of a child who cannot legally enter into a contract, and supervise the child’s use.
Where parental authorisation is required by the law in a learner’s country, it must be provided before the child uses features that process their personal information. For UK learners under 13, parental authorisation is required where consent is the legal basis for an online service. The applicable age threshold may be higher in other countries.
Parents and guardians should manage purchases and contact us about account, privacy or deletion requests for younger learners. We do not use learner information for behavioural advertising or sell it. Please do not send a child’s password, payment information or unnecessary personal details through the contact form.
A parent or guardian who believes a child’s information has been provided without required authorisation should use our contact form so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
12. How long we keep information
We retain account, profile, progress and subscription information while your account is active and for only as long afterward as needed for the purposes described in this policy. We may keep limited transaction, security, deletion and legal records for longer where required by law or reasonably necessary to prevent fraud or handle claims.
Support correspondence is retained only as long as reasonably needed to resolve the request and maintain an appropriate record. Residual copies may remain temporarily in protected backups until they are overwritten under the normal backup cycle.
13. Account deletion
Guitar Maestro provides an authenticated in-app deletion process. You may also follow the instructions on our account-deletion page. Verified external deletion requests are typically completed within 30 days.
Deletion removes the account's Firebase authentication record, profile, cloud progress, settings, stored account files and RevenueCat customer record, subject to limited legal or security retention described above. Deleting an account does not automatically cancel a subscription managed by Apple or Google. Separate local recordings or copies you exported may need to be deleted from your device or the destination where you saved them.
14. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- Access personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
- Request deletion of your information
- Restrict or object to certain processing
- Receive eligible information in a portable format
- Withdraw consent where processing relies on consent
- Complain to your local data-protection authority
The app may provide account export and deletion controls directly. You can also submit a request using the Guitar Maestro contact form. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
If you are in the United Kingdom, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concern first.
15. Security
We use technical and organisational safeguards designed to protect personal information. These include authenticated access, provider-based sign-in, app-integrity checks, access controls, encrypted network connections and account-scoped cloud records. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.
Please protect access to your Apple or Google account and contact us if you believe your Guitar Maestro account has been accessed without permission.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app, its providers or legal requirements change. We will update the date at the top of this page. If a material change requires a new notice or consent, we will provide it before the new processing begins.
17. Contact us
For privacy questions or to exercise your rights, use the Guitar Maestro contact form and identify your request as relating to Guitar Maestro.
