Research on spaced learning shows that returning to musical material across separate sessions can help long-term memory. That’s the idea behind a regular practice habit.
The research behind regular practice
A 2021 study found that spacing song-learning sessions improved retention of lyrics after three weeks, with less convincing evidence for melody retention. Research on musical motor skills has mixed results, so ten minutes is a useful starting point rather than a proven optimum for every guitarist.
